California Bans Rules Requiring Transparency in School Districts.
California Governor Gavin Newsome has just passed a law that effectively cuts parents out of some important and life changing decisions regarding their children's lives. The law makes it illegal for school districts to make any rule or policy that would require schools to notify the parents of a child when a child asks to change his or her gender.
What does it mean?
What this means is that a school can now effectively facilitate the change of a child gender, identity, pronouns, and possibly even the child's name without ever having to notify the parents that any of this is happening. This effectively allows schools to replace parents as the main decision maker in the lives of kids, at least with respect to the issues of gender and sexuality. This law also normalizes the practice of student and teachers colluding to keep secrets from parents and cut parents out of the loop when it comes to important decisions.
Stories like this are exactly why RCAAN supports legislation that require parental notification with respect to any decision that effects the health and wellbeing of children. RCAAN supports legislation that ensures that parents are notified of any and all decisions regarding the health and well-being of their children. This includes ensuring that parents notified when a child wishes to change their identity, name, or presentation in some way, and when the child attempts to make decisions regarding their gender and sexuality. It also means legislation ensuring that parental consent is required before any action can be taken with respect to the name, pronouns, identity, clothing choices, health, and well-being of their children. Notification is not enough; parental consent must be required.
